Blogging has been around, well quite frankly forever when you’re dealing with the infinite aspects of the world wide web. From the days of Doogie Houser taking to his digital journal at the end of the night to the emergence of Live Journal in the early 2000s, blogging has taken on many forms, served many purposes, and has taken on new forms over the course of the last 40 years.
Even today, you probably blog on a daily basis and don’t even know it. If you’re a regular on microblogging sites like Twitter and/or Facebook you’ve probably already experienced the power that one post on either said social media platform can produce.
Social media microblogging is certainly an important aspect to getting your message out there, there’s no question about that.
However, it shouldn’t be the only tool you utilize when it comes to blogging.
On too many separate occasions I come across individuals and businesses who are only using social media as a way to advertise, converse with their customers, or simply just conveying random information. And that’s all fine, in fact, it’s great that you’ve taken that step for yourself or business to get onto social media and actually be active.
But if your not using social media as a support mechanism to get people going back to your website… what’s the point?
The Power of Blogging
There’s so much more you can do in one blog post than you can do in a single social media post. Digging deep into blogging strategies is a topic for another day — which we’ll certainly get to — but on the surface of things lets just take a look at some of the obvious factors.
First, your message can be more long-form. Getting beyond the limits of social media microblogging, you simply have more free range to expand on your message within a blog post. And if you’re using social media in conjunction with your blog post then even better. Using that social media post as a hook to get people to click on your link is really killing two birds with one stone. You might hear the term “clickbait” from time-to-time and that’s not what I’m getting at here considering the pejorative aspects of “clickbait”. What gets a blog post away from just being “clickbait” is expanding on that great headline with great relatable content which got the reader engaged in the first place.
Second, blogging gives you a more legitimate reason to post on social media. Like blogging itself, there’s a viable strategy to posting on social media which we’ll get to in another blog post of our own. But a blog post pertinent to your website and social media account is another opportunity to engage with your audience on social media that could in fact turn into that next viral moment.
Third, a well put together blog post from top to bottom can do wonders for your SEO. Using the right keywords, images, and how you compile your content could be all the difference in boosting your Google score and getting more traffic back to your site.
Lastly, and probably most important of all, blogging gets people to your site. This is really an all-encompassing aspect of what was previously mentioned, however, this cannot be stressed enough. A post on Facebook and/or Twitter without a link back to your website is fine on its own but if done too often what does it ultimately get you? A link to a blog on your website that’s posted to Twitter or Facebook not only gets people engaged with your social media page but it also gives people the opportunity to get engaged with your website. And the more people stay on your website the better the chance they could end up buying a product or buying a service, another win for you.
